It has a lot of advantages, but I find I spend a lot of time making poor quality maps with MS Paint. Roll20 is great because it automatically creates a grid that all the monsters and PCs can snap to and the marketplace has a bunch of grenade maps. But none of the maps tend to fit my adventures and many already have a grid system on them which ends up being confusing when the actual grid system comes in top. What do you guys use to make custom maps for adventures? I have already posted about this, but I am currently developing this - Arcane Mapper [] - for easily building high quality maps. It is also what I currently use to make maps for my own games (both so I can test it since its still in development and because it is much easier for me to produce high quality custom maps). The nice thing is that you just draw out the rooms and it handles making walls, connecting rooms, etc. And uses a forced perspective so large maps can be made without perspective issues. And of course lighting and shadows while using simple 2D images (no 3D modeling). To avoid hijacking the thread, if you want to talk more about it see the other reddit post here: • • • •. For battle maps i use. It can work with sprites and terrain art from classic video games, so you can use basically anything. Or you can keep it simple and just use their drawing tools. Can make orthagonal, hexagonic, or isometric maps. You can then export the finished map and upload it to roll 20; As long as you're not working with tiles with uneven ratios (like 16x32) it's pretty easy to just drag and drop, the map just needs fine tuning so it all lines up. Another program i use is although this one is far more powerful as a world creation tool than a battlefield painter. It's also paid software, so take that with a grain of salt. You can also import your own assets; I've never done so but it is a feature.
